Nancy Apiyo
Lives in: Gulu

We met Apiyo back in 2006 when she was living in an IDP (internally displaced persons) camp because of the civil war in northern Uganda. Her mother died of AIDS in 2001, and her father abandoned the family. This left the responsibility of caring for Apiyo and her two other sisters to Apiyo's older brother and sister (ages 17 and 14) . Life was very hard. There was no income for the family. Thankfully, Hope Alive! was able to enroll Apiyo and all of her siblings, thus enabling them to be in school. Peace has come to Gulu and the IDP camp has been disbanded, with everyone moving back to their home villages. Apiyo and her family still remain with the project, taking part in Hope Alive! activities and working hard at school. Apiyo’s future is much brighter and her life is being transformed.
